I'd like to know if there are still many towns with that all flavor, where all neighbors know each other, with a main street full of small business and pop and mom stores, a diner or restaurant where the waitress knows you and where suburban homes and shopping malls are far, far away.

Am I a bit romantic these days?

Sounds like a lot of small towns in Alaska. Around here, if you've been here very long you know just about everyone in town, hardly anyone locks their doors, and nearly all of the businesses are locally owned. A tourist once asked my boyfriend for directions to the nearest McDonald's and he told them, "go out the highway through the blinking yellow light, take a left at the first major intersection, and it'll be on your right at the third stoplight." What he didn't tell them was that it was 250 miles.

Pretty much every town in Vermont with the exception of the Greater Burlington area.

Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Asheville, and Boone North Carolina all - to varying degrees - have STRONG local traditions of supporting independent and local businesses.

Additionally, Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Durham collectively are foodie heaven - locavores galore, and a number of GREAT locally-owned eateries from quickies to places that have been profiled in Bon Apetit, and just about anything in between. There's a bit of that in downtown Asheville as well, though all of those cities and towns DO have at least one ugly strip of chain stuff.
