It was a trip to St. Louis that pleasantly surprised me.
( being a cub fan it's not easy )
I have never traveled to the south but I felt a southern influence
there - am I wrong ? Nice setting, a little less hectic.

Now there many more cities I expected more than I got
ie: Las Vegas, Denver.

Others still came as advertised such as the San cities

St. Louis defiantly does not suck like the Cardinals
Just curious: what did you expect from Denver? How was it not met?

Agree about Omaha. It is very midwestern, however.

Mind you this is just a small snapshot of time - 3 times actually.
In my naiveté I expected more of a naturalistic new age mountain
city. What I found was a typical large city stuck in the mountains.
Traffic, smog, graffiti and the usual suspects.
Obviously my expectations were too idealized to start with.
I'm sure Denver is a great city for millions, it just didn't click with me.
Not as bad as Vegas though, which I find to be nothing but a huge bowl
of cheese in the desert. Denver at least makes sense.

On a side note Grand Junction Co. has the Coolest 4th of July
fireworks show, a real slice of Americana.

I thought Nashville was quite cool when I visited. In my mind, I had thought it was a place stuck in southern traditions with confederate flags hanging everywhere (yeah, me and my stereotyping), but it turned out to be a nice place.

I had a feeling Austin, TX would also be nice, and it turned out to be really great...

Well, many people have the same experience with Denver as you. My parents thought it would be more in the mountains. It's just a city. Mostly, we eat, work and sleep like everywhere else. It does have great access to the mtns, and a lot of arts, museums, and other "big city" stuff. And the Rockies are going to the World Series!

Cleveland! I went to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and it's a beautiful, clean, cosmopolitan city with wonderful neighborhoods, restaurants, pro teams, the R&R museum, the science museum.

People were so nice - I was there during the games with the Cavaliers vs the Spurs, and the city was all excited about it - there were jerseys flying on the buildings with Labron James' number, everybody at the hotel was talking about it. The hotel was beautiful, and within walking distance of lots of fun things to do. The restaurants are superb.

Definitely go if you're a Rock and Roll fan, if nothing else. You'll find Cleveland a nice place. I wanted to stay longer.

I have taken a major liking toward Winston-Salem, NC. Compared to Charlotte and Raleigh, it's got far less traffic, much less road rage/aggressive drivers, and slower growth. I know they probably don't want the secret exposed, but I think they're safe from all the ridiculous growth we're getting in these parts...for now

You mean my Cardinals, with the second most world series victories in MLB history? haha just kidding with you

And I agree with Nashville. A friend of mine did a show for CMT in Nashville, so I only drove through, but I didn't expect it to be so nice! I went to a gas station to get directions to a restaurant afterwards and it was the nicest gas station employee I have ever met!

Chicago!

I never ever had any desire to visit there until a friend of mine offered me some tickets for a Lions/Bears game at Soldier Field. I've always figured it would be like Detroit, not much to do at night and seemingly always half-deserted. So i/we went there for a week-end when the game was to be played and was-i-ever suprised by Chicago.

Absolutely love the nightlife there, it still has a midwestern feel so that makes it all the better!

So much for my perception of Chicago being like Detroit! HA!

When DH and I were dating, he took me to Omaha to meet his family. I was very surprised at how hilly it is, and how many trees there are. I thought it would be flat like Chicago. Now that I have spent a great deal of time in Omaha, I have learned that it has a big arts scene, too. I think I have been to all the museums as well.

Each and every one of the folks that came to visit me in ABQ absolutely loved the place.

Albuquerque is one of the gems of the Southwest.
I agree. ABQ has a lot to offer. Great, mild weather, scenery, not too big.
