I was surprised by Virginia Beach ... I had read many negatives about the whole Hampton Roads area on this forum, and was pleasantly surprised by what I found while visiting. Virginia Beach was clean, lovely beaches, lots to do, an amazing boardwalk, friendly people, beautiful parks ... it was a far cry from what I was expecting.

The people are really friendly, and the city itself is not too far from some beautiful scenery. I had a great time and left wanting to come back for another visit.

Anyone else ever have a similar experience? Doesn't have to be a BIG city, either..

And, one more note... let's keep this one positive, folks!
Surprisingly...Atlanta!!! <3 Although...what's up with your socks?

Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Like many people I thought this town would be backwards and and full of "rednecks." When my friend bought a house there, I thought he'd lost his mind. But as the years have gone by I've visited quite a few times. Downtown is much cooler than I thought it would be. There's always something going on--maybe not a LOT of options, but we always found something hip to do. Interesting architecture, interesting city history, interesting people. Great bookstores, beautiful scenery. Who knew?

Eureka Springs Arkansas surprised me...really loved it. It's been awhile but it would be fun to go back now and take my kids.

Columbus, Ohio. Thought it was going to be the typical rust belt mid-major, but wow, I really was impressed. The same goes for Cincinnati and Roanoke, VA.

Gotta say Indianpolis here. I had no expectations going in, but it's a great city with a fairly vibrant downtown. Very good people there too.

I was expecting to be bored with Provo/Salt Lake after a year in school because of how small town the area is, but discovered the hiking scene and rediscovered playing in the snow.
