The 34-square-mile island of Manhattan, NY, isn't the largest river island (an island completely surrounded by rivers) in the 48 contiguous states. Sauvie Island, near Portland OR, covers over 40 square miles.
Since Block Island does knock MA off the furthest NSWE point over RI, I found one that is a sure thing and even odder IMO. Ontario has points further north, south, east and west than anywhere in the entire state of Wisconsin.
The Quad Cities are made up of the 5 cities of Rock Island, Moline, East Moline, Davenport, and Bettendorf. Of course these cities on the opposite banks of the Mississippi are located in Illinois and Iowa.....states with universities named Illinois, Northwestern, and Iowa which are part of a grouping of 12 universities that go by the name of the Big Ten. Of course, Iowa also has another university, Iowa State, which is one of the 10 universities that make up the Big 12.
There are many cities and one state (Georgia) that have the same name as a country. But only three counties do: Lebanon PA, Switzerland IN, and Grenada MS. Three more have the names of the territories of foreign countries: Ascension and St. Helena LA, and Scotland MO.
There are quite a few county names that are the same as foreign capitals: Athens, Douglas, Georgetown, Hamilton, Lapaz, Nassau, Ottawa, Stanley, Victoria. I leave it to you to look up any capitals you are unfamiliar with.
What I thought was interesting is that in the Bahamas there is a Nassau, Long Island and a Freeport. Nassau county is on Long island NY and there's a town in Nassau county called Freeport.
In Vermont, the 45th parallel is the official boundary between the US and Canada. But due to a surveying error, the village of Derby Line-- which sits north of the 45th parallel-- ended up being in Vermont, where it is today.
Not far from Derby Line are Bebee Plain, Vermont, and Stanstead, Quebec. These villages were once a single town, accidentally split in two by the same surveying error. After the error, it offically became two towns because because no single town can be shared by two nations. The towns still share a single business district. The US/Canada border runs directly through the middle of some homes and businesses.
You say no single town can be shared by 2 nations but what about Nogales az and Nogales Mexico?
Washington is further west than any point in Ontario, so doesn't make all four directions.
I was thinking north to south.
