Nova Scotia is closer to France than it is to the USA(think about St. Pierre et Miquelon).

So is Puerto Rico (think about Guadeloupe and Martinique).

Actually it's not. At their closest points to each other, Maine and Nova Scotia are about 65 miles apart, whereas NS and St. Pierre are roughly 200 miles apart.

Perhaps you meant Newfoundland?

Poniatowski, Wisconsin, is one of four points in the world that is exactly half way between the Prime Meridian and the International Date line, and half way from the Equator to a Pole. Two of the others are in oceans, and there is one in Xinjiang province, in China near the four corners of China, Mongolia, Russia and Kazakhstan, at a spot that is apparently unmarked and not easily accessible.

The only places in the continental U.S. that have antipodes on land are a small area northeast of Shelby, Montana, and a couple of specks near Lamar, Colorado. These correspond to Kerguelen and Amsterdam/St. Paul Islands, respectively.

However, Hawaii is largely antipodal to Botswana, and the northern coast of Alaska is antipodal to Antarctica.

The city of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, is the site of numerous hot springs. In fact, the original name of the town WAS "Hot Springs". The town renamed itself Truth or Consequences after a game show with the same name offered to air the program from the town.

One can watch the sunset over the high Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico, some distance away in the western Rio Grande Valley of Texas. There is a picture of Pikes Peak taken from Oklahoma panhandle. Of course that was @ 30,000 ft. in a plane, good visibility (160 miles or so NW).

You can, in fact, watch the sunset twice. If you're in a spot where you can see the last sliver of the sun disappear below the horizon, you can lie down and watch it, then quickly stand up and see it again, or quickly run up a ladder. It's easier to see the sun rise twice, by standing on the porch and watching it, then jump off and see it again. But, at sunrise, it is harder to predict with accuracy if the air will be clear enough to see the sunrise that sharply, and the first sliver will catch you by surprise anyway.

One of the goofiest versions of this was in 2005 when the small Texas town of Clark voted to rename themselves DISH, Texas (intentional ALL CAPS). All residents got free satellite TV with all the trimmings for 10 years. I wonder if they will go back to Clark here in three years.
