It's very close. Can't be more than 1/2 a mile.

This one's pretty crazy; Denton, Texas is only 5 miles closer as the crow flies from Key West, FL (southern most part of lower 48) than it is to the Northwest Angle, MN (northern most part of lower 48) Its 1104 miles vs 1109 miles.

Baltimore and Washington DC are west of Ithaca, New York.

All of Florida is west of all of New York.

Don't know if anyone mentioned this, but Redding, CA at 41°N can grow Washingtonia Palm trees, while east of the Rockies, the reliable line for Washingtonia's is 30°N!

Definitely amazing.

Redding is about at same latitude as NYC, no Washington Fan Palms in New York City, lol.
Even in Virginia Beach (37N) they "wrap" their palms in winter to ensure they survive.

Most people would be surprised just how far north California really is,
because of the mildness a lot of people think is farther south.
Southernmost California is on par with South Carolina.
Dallas, Texas is farther south than anywhere in California.
Northernmost California (42N) is farther north than extreme southern Ontario, Canada!!!

The Southern border of California is still further north then the Florida Panhandle!

The Cumberland Gap, the biggest gap in the Great Appalachian ridge was created by the asteroid collision, this made the 2nd busiest westward migration route after the Hudson/Mohawk water gap.

It's also farther north than all of Georgia's coast (though not all of Georgia itself).

Is there an explanation for why that border is not a straight line?

IMHO Texas' geographic features tend to give the impression that its further north than it really is. Especially in winter. Now the Panhandle does go pretty far north, further than the Missouri bootheel and almost as far as Virginia's latitude, but the DFW area is pretty far south, most of it as far south as northern Louisiana. But a lot of its scenery fits more in with Oklahoma and Kansas than with Alabama. However it is not true that Dallas is further south than all of California. San Diego goes slightly further south.
