Yeah, but it's sitting in the middle of a state where $100,000 MIGHT get you a small co-op in an over-55 community if you search hard enough. NJ is one of the most expensive housing markets in the country.

As someone else said, it has to be the area, not just the city of Newark itself. Newark has major issues with crime and poverty and I can't see $400K being the median price of a single-family home within the city limits. For $400K, you could buy a nice condo or a small house in a good town.

Correct, and having an expensive real estate market is a pretty good indicator of the amount of wealth there.

Also an indicator of competition for living space in a congested but desirable area. Proximity to Manhattan is a main driving factor.
