It depends on what your view and there's also the view that land masses shifted. So, in turn, how we view things now in regard to land masses may not have been the case in the past.

Terms like ' African-American' and 'European-American' (and all of its subvariants like Irish-American, Italian-American, etc.) are culturally defined even if they tend to fall along biological lines.

To OP, not surprising at all. Of course this is true. It's just human nature to divide populations into "us" vs "them", when in actuality, deep down we're all the same.

Biologically, yes. Culturally, there are great differences between peoples both along and opposed to racial lines.
