As title says I'm going to spend about three monthsin the States, but Frankly I'm very unsure about the city: I can choose between Austin, Tempe in AZ, Madison in Wisconsin, Columbus in Ohio, Urbana-Champaign and Richmond in Virginia.

I'd love a country place full of farms and nature parks, as I want something more 'rural', what would you suggest?

I think the most rural of those would be Urbana-Champaign. Richmond, Madison and Columbus are also surrounded by farmland, but they're larger cities so the farms would be farther away. I'm not at all familiar with the areas around Austin and Tempe.

It sounds like you're asking for quintessential Midwest America. Closest to that would probably be Urbana-Champaign, followed by Madison and Columbus.

Not really, it gets quite humid there, and there's no cacti. You'd have to go out in the country to find ranches.

What time of year are you going to be here? Austin can be brutally hot in the summer. Madison would be a better choice then, but the opposite would be true if it were wintertime.

Austin is a very modern city and you won't find ranches and cowboys here. However, you will find good old Texas hospitality and lots of great BBQ! There is a town about 2 hours from Austin, Bandera, which is known as the Cowboy Capital so that might be fun to visit.

Tempe has areas not too far away that would fit as well.

Don't expect anything from the rural surroundings of Champaign-Urbana except flat cornfields as far as the eye can see, planted right up to the edge of the pavement. Austin and Columbus are huge cities, with nightmarish traffic just trying to get out to the bucolic countryside. Richmond and Madison would be the most accessible, in terms of getting out of the city and into pleasant, attractive countryside.

I'd scratch Urbana-Champaign ("Chambana" as it's colloquially referred to) off your list because the natural scenery around it is very limited. It's dominated by flat land full of corn and soybean farms. The same goes for the immediate surroundings around Columbus and Madison, but in both cases it's only a short drive before you get into some interesting terrain and scenery including rolling farmland and wooded forests. By contrast, you have to drive a long ways from Chambana before you see anything particularly interesting.

I can't speak for the other cities as I have not been to them, at least not during my adult life.
