My boyfriend and I (27 & 26 yrs old) are looking to move from Mississippi to somewhere on the east coast. We would like to find a city within a 45 min. drive from the beach. I am in the medical field so I would like a city with a nice size medical community. We would also like the city to have some decent priced 1 & 2 bedroom places to rent ( approx. $850). We have no kids, nor plan to have any so school systems are not a big deal. Anyone have any suggestions?

West Palm Beach and anywhere from there down to Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Plenty of opportunities in medical field with the number of seniors there, but it's still a fun and vibrant area with plenty of younger people. It's beautiful, it's relatively inexpensive (should be within your price range for an apartment, might be 100-200 more though), and it's right near the beach, much less than 45 minutes drive. The beaches are beautiful - clean, warm, sandy, lots of palm trees. The nightlife is great, the bars and restaurants are awesome.

It's very hot and humid but actually probably no worse than Mississippi. In fact, it will be a bit better because they do get a breeze which helps cool things off a little, it's not such stagnant hot air.

That's all I can think of. Maybe Melbourne, FL or Jacksonville, FL also. Maybe even Tampa Bay area. Anything north on the east coast is out of the price range you describe.

You MIGHT be able to get a 2 BR apartment in NJ, Monmouth County, for the low 1000's; a 1 BR, a decent one, should be around $1000 a month for the least expensive. In Monmouth County you are close to some nice beaches but you can only really enjoy them from about May thru September. You can enjoy them in winter too but not in the traditional beach sense of lying out and swimming. NJ is very good for the medical field, it's a densely populated state and demand for healthcare is high here. Also, you'll be within 30 to 45 minutes of NY City, and within an hour or so of Philadelphia, from Monmouth County NJ.

That's about all I can think of for you.

If the pay is higher, then rent is not a big deal. I am a RN and in Mississippi I barely pull 2400 every month.

The pay in NJ should be higher. You may even then consider NY City. You can live in NJ up closer to the city, a 1 BR would cost around $1100+, a 2 br would be $1300+ (roughly), you would commute into NY City and make more (and pay more tax, you'd pay a city tax, but still making more money) and you'd still be within 45 minutes of the beach. Well, maybe more like an hour, but still an easy enough drive. This way you benefit from the higher pay in NY City, your commute would be easier than driving (and cheaper) because you would take a bus or train into the city. You would get to enjoy the city. Your boyfriend/fiance/husband would also find it much easier to find a job here than anywhere else, no matter what work he does.

NJ could work for you. And, you could live in NYC if you want, but that means sacrificing a car altogether, and paying more for rent, which I don't think you want. I think it's nice to have the freedom a car gives and the lower rent helps one afford that luxury.

Philly is about an hour from the beach. The medical community is large with CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia), U Penn Health, and Jefferson plus Temple Health and a few tenet hospitals. There's also Cooper in Camden.
1 BR's for that price exist in Mt. Airy and West Philly as well as a few close in neighborhoods like Fishtown and South Philly. Perhaps a little more. There's also some jersey burbs like haddonfield that are easy to get to center city on the train and are a bit closer to the shore (beach)

I would say where I live, as we have a good health care economy and affordable prices for nice apartments, but our beaches are lake beaches instead of the ocean beaches. It's in a good location for the region it is in though.

That's very low for an RN. I'm sure you'd do better up here.

Do you want to live in or near a city? What does you boyfriend do? Any other criteria?

Jersey is a good option, but it's a very suburban lifestyle.

The Atlantic City, New Jersey area would be a good choice at your age and will give you high wage opportunities.

You should look at Boston and some of the suburbs like Cambridge and Brookline. Not too far from the beach and a ton of medical facilities.
