I like St. Augustine, but I'm sure you already know about it.

Definitely either the South of Midwest, it's a preference in terms of personality/demographic. I like the Rockies but it's too far geographically from my comfort zone.

Galena matches your criteria to a T. It's beautiful and historic. Looks nothing like anywhere else in IL.

Yep and I believe that Yellow Springs is a college town or at least there is a college with a pretty large presence.

Our family owns a 2nd home in Galena .. and we LOVE the area. Beautiful visually. Historical downtown and architecture. Quaint shops. Plenty of nice restaurants. Dubuque, IA and the Mississippi is close by, with more modern shopping, universities, casinos, and all the typical franchises and conveniences, should you want that. The town of Galena has many B&B's, resorts, nearby. Plenty of wineries and outdoor activities to choose from. The Galena Territories has the Inn for visitors, but also homes that can be rented. There are stables, ballooning, golf and more available there as well. A laid-back, quiet, peaceful atmosphere makes for good living ... and visiting. If you need more specific info ... please feel free to shout out ...
