Not so much an amenity, but just the ability to wander around, explore neighborhoods and people watch all day on foot. Absolutely the best part about living in an urban environment. If I were to move to a suburb or rural area, I would definitely miss this the most. Oh, and all the food. I'd miss that too.

Well the OP didn't say big city so I'll list what I like about my small urb.

Great library
Urban pedestrian mall
Older neighborhoods with character
Wide variety of restaurants
Food co-op
Natural and ethnic food stores
Restored theaters
Mega-bus service
Farmers market
Greenways

Amenities I wish we had

Train service
Ikea

Some of these items like greenways and farmers market don't require a big population base. The others do - but except for the neighborhoods it might look urban or primarily suburban.

The things you hear on the subway...that alone is worth the cost of living here!
