Wall St and the people who work there make money off of the rest of the nation. If the Northeast were its own nation Wall St and its prestigious firms would be forced to shut down.

It's got to be one of the worst (with the exception of the specialized high schools) - I went to school in NYC and there are definitely so many cuts and because the students are not motivated, teachers aren't as well.

I personally think the West would do very well if it were its own nation. You have basically almost everything there - warm weather, cold in the north, fun (in California and Vegas), clean and beautiful beaches and so much more.
that may be true but do note that NY state is the country's largest producer of cabbages. that's got to count for something, right? .

I said West. With Asia exploding with commerce having a monopoly of parts on the west coast can't be understated.

Also the midwest would be the least prosperous, land locked countries are rarely successful.

They'd still be losing just as much if not more money to their new national government. Their politicians are always the ones demanding more spending, and this would become even more extreme with the fiscally conservative parts of the US trying to put the brakes on.

This would definitely be the case in the Northeast. It would probably be the case in the West as California dwarfs the other states in its region.

Japan and the UK import the cast majority of their food, and they're doing pretty well. Hong Kong was a slum that had to import drinking water and in a few decades it became one of the best places on the planet.

And the West would be nothing without it's cities. And the south would be nothing without it's cities. What's your point? This is not a "what if" question, it's an "as it stands now" question.

Everyone talking about population growth as a reason for the south to be more prosperous, as shown with the latest housing crisis, growth is not a good thing.

Going by the amount of Fortune 500 companies:

1. Northeast
2. West (including Southwest/Texas)
3. South
4. Midwest

False. They make money off the rest of the world.
