In my travels, I have noticed many cities that will advertise Irish bars but when you walk in, there is nothing Irish about them other than the fact that they have Guiness on tap. They are your run of the mill sports bar or semi upscale bar which doesn't seem very Irish. Does your city have these?

Yeah I think all cities have them. They even made a TV show after something like that (Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia).

Yes! This always seemed very back-handedly racist to me, actually. Sometimes they even play country music or pop at these places, and it's at that point that I quickly escort myself out the door. The best "Irish bars" would be those in established Irish/European n'hoods with no windows or fancy decor and a sign that simply says "Pete's"....or something in that nature.

Pretending to be Irish is trendy as evidenced by the "Hallmark/party store holiday" so widely celebrated here, so the fact that there are bars cashing in on it seems only natural. In my opinion St Patrick's Day is right up there with Valentine's Day and Halloween in terms of money blown on a holiday no one seems to know the true meaning or origin of.

I think a lot of bars go with an Irish Theme just so they can cash in on that one big day of the year. You don't really see to many German Themed, Belgian or even English themed bars around because they don't really have a big money making day to cash in on. Octoberfest is more of an outside party rather then something celebrated in a bar.

Well, you do, but maybe not where you live. You have a point though -- not nearly as many, that's for sure!
