The Boston Marathon attracts 500,000 visitors (abiet not all tecntically in the city of Boston)

Agreed on the premis. Indy is a fine city but these things are not so unique to Indy (and honestly dont see an Olympics there, look at Atlanata as a bigger city and the challenges encountered)

The Kentucky Derby, Belmont, Preakness, Daytona, Super Bowls that move around, DNCs, RNCs

Hell Philly has more than million every year on the parkway on the 4th

I mean NYC moves probably more than the whole population of Metro Indy (I dont even know how big it is) maybe two or three times onto and off of Manhattan by train everyday

There are interesting feats and large events all over the country - Doesnt that Austin music festval bring close to these numbers every year, another capital

I think the PA rodeo (yes thats right PA rodeo) in Harrisburg (another state capital) brings something like 300K every year

Then you didnt drive downtown.
Actually getting OUT of the car and exploring the city before offering opinions is bliss.
Plus if you were on I-65 you didn't go around Monument Circle...........

The Boston Marathon though is all spread out.
The Indy 500 is in a huge sporting venue so you have 400,000 people at the speedway for a race. Its alot more challenging to move those people out to their cars and hotels after the race than a spread around Marathon.
But Indy doesnt have issues doing this every year

My least favorite state Capital is Cheyenne. Much of that has to do with its location within Wyoming. The city isn't that spectacular either. Like Salem, it is a ho hum capital in a state with spectacular natural settings.

Ok then it's 500,000 mostly after Heartbreak hill (Newton) 30,000 runners and 36,000 baseball fans empting out so easily 350,000 between Copley and Kenmore Square.

With the larger cities that are state capitals (Boston, Atlanta, Indy, Denver, Phoenix, SLC, Nashville), the fact that they are capitals doesn't really affect my view of them because they are really so much more than the center of their states's government.

I tend to prefer the smaller quainter capital towns in the east, such as Annapolis (I already posted pictures), Concord, Augusta, Montpelier, and Dover. The most unique, however is Santa Fe.

The Head of the Charles is roughly confined to 2.5 miles of river bank, with most people concentrating around the Harvard and Northeastern Boathouses. Two days of crew racing (with many national teams representing). You need to see it to believe it.

400,000 i said.........
Heres the math, 267,000 seats. then the infield area raises the capacity of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to over 400,000
You will NEVER get official attendance figures though as the Hulman family doesn't release them. Indy locals know that though
but its safe to assume its nearly 400,000 people total both fans and workers for the event every may.
If you havent been to Indianapolis you need to visit before offering opinions.
