In my research for helping us decide whether (and if so, where) to move, I ran across this blog post: 7 Big relocation mistakes | Penelope Trunk Blog

Somewhat skewed, but some good points. Thought I'd share it here in case folks find it useful.

These were the thoughts posed:

1. We focus on what we gain instead of what we lose.
2. We underestimate the commute.
3. We waste time visiting in person before moving there.
4. We overestimate the raise.
5. We think we are an exception.
6. We trust a cost-of-living calculator.
7. We overlook key research.

I can tell you from experience that it is not wise to relocate to a different region of the country if you have a child who is in, or about to enter, 11th grade.

Interesting information, but I'm surprised about Madison WI Schools being bad or at least having a wide range of schools.
