I know you could cruise to the bahamas but... it's pretty cheap to fly. Check out spirit airlines I know the Fort Lauderdale to Nassau route used to be cheap.

Miami might also be on your list though I've never stayed there and imagine it might be unbearably hot in the summer.
Why is Miami on your list as some sort of last resort attempt at finding a good urban/beach combo? C'mon, Jones Beach? It's still a whole hour from NYC. I'd put Coney Island befor Jones Beach.

You can take a boat from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas. You'll be near the Bahamas and near Miami at the sametime when it comes to Fort Lauderdale. So you'll always be near a big city.

Some people are apparently OK at judging how good a city is, but pretty horrible at judging how good a beach scene is. Well, in their case, not that good. They just verbatim picked the largest 3 metros in the U.S., lots of thinking involved.

I'd put Honolulu/Waikiki/Oahu above all else. On Oahu it can be as urban or tranquil as you'd like, good water temps, and the best scenery. For the best beach resorts go with Maui, or do a combo trip.

Folly beach outside Charleston SC has a bit of the hippie vibe - great beach with good waves, warm water in summer & fall. You can rent a house or condo.

Other options are Savannah, St Augustine, possibly Wilmington NC.

I am thinking they don't want to fly or something?
