Mountains. The Mountains are so beautiful and breathtaking; especially to somebody not used to such heights and seeing such vast distances away. Here is a music video that I think captures the beauty of this geography;

Ne-Yo - So Sick - YouTube

As for the beach;
+ You're required to buy Flood Insurance in many areas (which is very expensive).
+ You have to worry about hurricanes in many coastal US areas.
+ The Ocean oftentimes has odors
+ Flooding
+ Oil Spills now
...... It's overall just a far riskier and more expensive investment. I would prefer to vacation on a beach than a mountain but living on one is a totally different thing.

If I had to pick between the two, I'd pick the beach.

However, why choose between the two when you've got areas like Santa Cruz and Big Sur?

beach for sure, I've sometimes fantasied about living in a house boat one of these days. I don't want to live anywhere non coastal, just not for me, but having a mountain backdrop would be cool also.

mountains.

I love the many different micro-climates you can get by just losing/gaining elevation

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. The thin waterfall into the ocean is the give-away.

I love the mountains, but I voted beach because I've always lived within 50 miles of the ocean.

Mountains. For some reason I associate beach settings with sloppiness and humidity and feeling too lazy to do anything. Lol. But beaches can be beautiful.
