In the west, including California, even LA, where I live right now, I love the cities. Because its part of peoples' lifestyle to go enjoy and recreate in the outdoors. Even in LA, I walk on my street and see the San Gabriels. Having high points where I can get a view of distance mountains, hills, coasts, where the neighborhoods are a mix of urban and suburban, I don't mind it at all.
However, in the northeast and Chicago. No. Not my kind of cities. I don't find the aesthetics or the lifestyle of New York, Philly, Boston, and Chicago to be all that appealing. I do enjoy visiting those cities, and I wouldn't mind at all living in quiet town/quaint exurb outside those places. But even then, only if I was in a family raising stage.
Reality is, is that can be very difficult to have any social life, or meet anyone unattached in suburbs and small towns, that is something to consider. Small towns and suburbs are families and they are busy with family things, and don't have a need to meet others that don't have kids. So that is something to consider.
I grew up in the suburbs, but always wanted to live more "in the city". I'm 45 and while my neighborhood is semi-suburban (new-urbanism), it's in an inflill project within Denver. I still prefer living in a densely populated urban area and don't have any desire to live in far-flung suburbs with large lots and especially not in a rural or exurban area. If I didn't have kids, I'd prefer to live in a high rise condo or an urban townhome.
Grew up in rural north east CT. Went to college in Boston and then lived there for 2 years after boston.. It was an awesome experience and wouldn't trade it for anything but city life started to wear on me after meeting my wife, calming down on the partying and the desire to own my own house and have a vehicle. Now I live in Rural NH on 4 acres of woods and I love it. Have absolutly no desire to go back to the city what-so ever. cant imagine trying to raise kids there either.

I feel the same way, I'd include DC and San Franicsco proper also. That whole way of life is just abrasive to me b/c I like the outdoors also. Good post, maybe I would like a more spread out city mixed with nature better. I've definitely considered moving to SoCal.
