In most of these places, it's still the self-defining characteristic about a person.
They haven't been able to advance enough yet to just accept it normally.

As a gay person, I'm gonna have to go ahead and correct you there. Maybe you've had atypical experience, but most cities have no issue "accepting it normally."

Is CA welcoming of gays-across the board? I.e. in somewhere like Bakersfield? I assume there are places in CA which aren't much different to Alabama in attitudes towards gays. Whereas pretty much all of Vermont seems equally tolerant/liberal.

Oklahoma (along with Arkansas) is the most socially conservative state in all the U.S. Hence, overall I do not think that Oklahoma would be that welcoming to someone with same-sex attractions.
Given its social conservatism and the predominant Evangelicalism, Oklahoma probably should stand alone in this poll. It makes no sense to have Oklahoma grouped with the Plains states to the north.
Just a few insights to think about that the OP that made the poll doesn't seem to understand.

Would you say moreso than Mississippi and Alabama?
Eastern NM and the Texas Panhandle is also one of the most evangelical parts of the country.

Certainly in terms of anti-abortion measures.
And then, on the same-sex issue, it would be on the level (or perhaps greater?) of Bama and MS.

Sorry, but I won't vote for CA until Prop 8 is finally done away with once and for all. The fact that the people of the state voted to ban gay marriage has left a very bitter taste in my mouth.
(I voted New England).

I hear you. At the same time, has the electorate of any other state voted directly to ratify it?
