Western Massachusetts sounds like it would fit the bill. Boston ,NYC ,Albany ,Hartford ,Providence are all within 2hrs of the area. We have the Green Mountains , White Mountains and the Berkshires are all in the area. Plus you also have the benefits of having the ocean within 2 hrs drive.

If you want city type living there is Springfield(150k+) with it's surrounding metro,Or the more trendy Northampton(40k) just to the north. Northampton is more quirky and bohemian with a decent walkable downtown witth shops and restauraunts all over. You also have Amherst to the east of Northampton which also has a lively downtown but is dominated by UMass which house roughly 35000 students each school year.

The airlines today don't offer great service to smaller towns. Yes, you can jump on a regional, get to a hub, then get to where you really want to go, but frankly unless you live in a top 15 airport city, you are limited.

So, that said, Denver is your best option. United is there. If Denver, as you said, is too big and expensive, then perhaps consider one of the outlying Denver communities, such as Boulder, Fort Collins, or even Colorado Springs, or Castle Rock in between The Springs and DIA.

What is your budget?

Would you rather be out East or West?

Winchester VA, or any of the small towns along I-81 through the Blue Ridge mountains. Martinsburg, WV is another option.
Nearest Airport is Dulles IAP, approximately 1 hour away.

I forgot about Dulles. That opens up a lot of possibilities. especially for someone who likes to ski.

Boston is less than 2 hours from the mountains in Maine, New Hampshire, Western Mass and Vermont. It has a major airport with multiple daily flights down to Houston and every major U.S. and European city.
