In which states besides West Virginia are nice big houses $30-$50k? (rent, low crime)

Be very careful comparing homes in different regions of the country. Utilities, taxes and cost of living may be extremely different as well as quality of life.
This thread intrigues me. I assumed the original poster meant $130 to $150,000, but I guess not! I've never heard of these numbers, other than from grandparents talking about buying a house in the 1940s. I am from California, so I realize my sense of reality is screwed, but are you guys serious??
My family lives up in Upstate NY and yes you can find homes for cheap. They have increased a bit, but you can still find many homes for under $50k. However, the condition of them are another story- definitely fixer uppers! But the areas are great, however finding a job is difficult in these small towns.
temperatures in many parts of west virginia in july and august are above 90 degrees.we past 100 a few days last summer.if you have an old brick house which lacks the benefit of many large shade trees you will roast without a/c.buying a house in the woods as opposed to one in an open field can save you a lot in cooling costs, along with the added benefit of not having to cut grass
Thanks for the advice! + reputation for ya!(would be honored to get some too) Wow 100 degrees? Global warming is worse than I thought! Are you saying brick houses suck when it comes to keeping cool? Its not always possible to find a nice house with alot of trees around it. Ill try to find one in the woods though
Um, Michigan cheap??? Here in Macomb County the average house runs like $230s-250,000! And the economy... forget it. I cant find a decent paying job to save my life!!! I cant wait to move.
Thanks again. So far my two top choices are southeast OH and parts of WV(definately NOT the tip near D.C!) I havent looked much into PA, KN, KY or AK. I want a state with mild summers(70s to 80s) nice springs and falls(40s to 60s) and mild winters(from above 0 to 40s) and my top two choices have that nice weather. They also have nice houses for $50k

Maybe in the mountains. I do know that OH winters are barely touch freezing, you can thank global warming for that. The cold winters are way up north or in the high mountains but even that wont be cold as global warming progresses.
