Yeah.. the biggest states... who obviously have the most small towns would obviously have the most people collectively.
What a surprise.

NC would have dodged a bullet in this scenario, since Durham was split from Raleigh and Greensboro and Winston-Salem were separated when they last reconfigured MSAs. That would have lopped off another 2.1 million from the state's population, meaning it would rank 9th. Still not too bad though. Similarly, SC would have dropped to 18th if Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson (~1.3 million) was still one MSA instead of being split three ways.

Yeah, but here are some of the really big jumps:

New Jersey: from 11th to 39th (28 spots)
Massachusetts: from 14th to 32nd (18 spots)
Maryland: from 19th to 46th (27 spots)

I was surprised Indiana ends up with more population than Illinois.
Largest cities of both that shouldn't be part of the 1M+ MSA:
Indiana:
Ft. Wayne: 223K
South Bend/Elkhart: 150K
Evansville: 116K
Lafayette/W. Lafayette: 90K
Bloomington: 69K
Terre Haute: 57K
TOTAL: 705K
Illinois:
Rockford: 152K
Peoria/Pekin: 148K
Bloomington/Normal: 120K
Champaign/Urbana: 110K
Springfield: 116K
Moline/Rock Island: 82K
TOTAL: 728K

I question the data; unless Rockford was mistakenly included in Chicago's MSA. It shouldn't since it is in a separate TV market. I am also assuming you left NW Indiana in Chicago's MSA?

Every county of ever major MSA was subtracted from the population total regardless of the state it was in.

Yep, in the current designations, NC only loses the Charlotte and Raleigh MSAs.
