Please share and explain about one state that you believe is the most quintessentially American state. You can list more than one if you like.

Here is mine:

1) Ohio - The state is only a day worth of driving away from 50% of the U.S. There is a huge manufacturing in the state that is considered as the backbone of America. In presidential elections, OH is truly a bellwether state with unpredictable leaning to either party based on diverse electoral bases due to both urban and rural areas throughout the state. Ohio even has parts that can be considered southern, midwestern, and northeastern.

2) Maryland - It is considered as "America in Miniature" based on its landscape ranging from mountains in the west to the coast. The population is very diverse with people from all walks of life: white collar, blue collar, and immigrants along with racial diversity. Same thing can be said about California, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts.

3) Missouri - Although it is the traditional bellwether state, it has been leaning Republican lately in past elections. The center of U.S. population is still in the state. Missouri is viewed as the microcosm of America, especially with its central location in the middle of the country.

America can not really be narrowly defined into one quintessential definition, nor can one state meet even a good fraction of the criteria that it would entail. Having lived in Boston, Seattle, and now Santa Fe and travelled to 38 states I can't think of a state that could encompass the flinty Yankee ways of New England, the outdoorsy and green consciousness of the Northwest, the deeply integrated tri cultural (Hispanic, Native American and Anglo) aspects, palpable artistry and ancient relics of the Southwest, the salt of the earth and homespun ways of the Upper Midwest, the independent and fierce pride of Texas, the Aloha spirit of Hawaii, or the rhythm and tapestry of colors of Miami. This country is far too diverse to sum it up into a small microcosm or one state. But if you want a fabricated answer, you could always ask Sarah Palin about 'the real America', whatever the hell that means.

I voted for all of them because they are all equally American.

There is no one state that has every section of the country within its borders, so I think trying to imagine one up is pretty ridiculous. And all three of these states can be affiliated specifically with a region (Ohio and Missouri the Midwest, Maryland the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast even though the Census Bureau incorrectly classifies it as southern...2/3 of it are not the south.)

It would be easier to say which states AREN'T quintessentially American.

I would say, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Vermont, and southern Florida feel like 'outliers' and don't really exude a very strong vibe of Americana.

I voted for Ohio, but almost went with Maryland. These two states have much overlap between region and culture.

Iowa. It ranks 26th in area, 26th in median household income, and 30th in population, and is centrally located. Near the middle of every pack.

But Iowa is a blue state. Ohio is a swing state.

USA is too diverse. New York, Texas and California are completely different but are all very American.
