I just got a remote freelancing job that gives me the freedom to live anywhere in the US/Canada. What are some cities that would be convenient for a single person who works in their studio apartment and doesn't own a car? Here are my most important criteria:
- Big, modern city
- Reasonable cost of living
- Reasonable taxes (esp. income tax)
- Good public transit (since I will have no car)
- Walkable (again, no car)
- Good healthcare
In return, I'm willing to tolerate a place that's a bit boring. Here is what I don't want to focus the ranking on:
- Social scene & nightlife
- Arts, entertainment & sports
- Nature, scenery & tourism
- Culture & diversity
Essentially, I'm looking for a place to live the next couple of years that is convenient and efficient, freeing me up to focus on my work as much as possible.
I would go with Chicago. Northside neighborhoods like Andersonville or Rogers Park would be good options in terms of cost of living, walkability and convenience to transit.
