Just remove Los Angeles and the list will be fine. The two most important things are Finance and Government. Nobody really cares about film/TV production and the recording industry.

L.A. and the rest of the West is bound to run out of water.

New York, Washington, Chicago, and Houston will be the top 4 cities.

Exactly. If you are not a global player in business & finance, you cannot response to the sharp rise in global competition. In other words, you are not that important on a global scale. Its obvious that LA is in the shadow of New York & Chicago in this department. LA today is a city of small business and considered less global influence than NY, Chicago. According to the recent study by the Brookings institute, the two most globally connected cities in America are New York & Chicago.

If LA is an important city in today's global economy, it would at least make FDI's list of the cities of the future.

Without New York & Chicago, America would not dominate the world financial markets and economy. Instead, our financial strength would be less significant as compared to other global institutions such as London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Paris, Shanghai, Frankfurt..etc

Its Midwest location is precisely how it rose to such prominence in the first place. Lest we forget on account of it not being very glamorous, the most important commodity in the world besides water is FOOD. The American Midwest is the most prolific agricultural region in the world, and Chicago is the clearinghouse for the infinite billions of dollars that flow in and out of the agricultural industry. It also still remains one of the most vital transportation hubs in the nation, and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

I don't know how that could be possible if California is the largest agriculture producer in the U.S.

Well then let me try to explain it to you: California is one state. Meanwhile, the Midwest is comprised of several states from the Arkansas border to the Canadian border, from Ohio to Kansas.

Yes, you are right about at least one thing: the midwest consists of several states. But California alone holds the title as the most prolific agricultural region.

Hmmm.. let's see.. International trade activity built to record levels in 2007 despite slower growth in the U.S. economy-International trade trends and impacts- World Trade Center Association....Due to favorable conditions with the region's trade partners and the weak dollar, exports rose for the region by 15% and the 2-way total value ranked first in the nation with a 12% increase to 375 billion ( L. A. Customs District )...17.2 million TEU's ( twenty foot equivilent container units ) handled in 2007 for an easy and runaway #1 ranking in the country... Ranked 5th in the world ( LA/LB ) behind Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzen.... area gained 35,000 jobs last year for total worker count of 485,100.... number 1 export, not movies or general entertainment but electrical apparatus! Not a global player? Downer, we're a PLAYAH!! Don't be a hatah! (how do you spell these?) Be careful what you put in boldface, Downy! ( keep in mind, that's just 'trade' )

I believe that is true in per capita terms, -but that the midwest U.S. is more so in absolute terms.

"Cities mean no more, and no less than what we make them to be." A variation on a line George Burns said in the movie, "OH, GOD!" As I've said before, all of life's questions are answered in the movies!

Whatever. If you want to argue irrelevant minutia, do it with someone else. It doesn't change the premise of my original point.
