Missouri is the state with the worst highways in this country IMO, especially in the Kansas City area. When I drove from KC to Joplin, I could not believe how bad some of these Missouri Highways area! Highway 71 going from KC to Joplin is one of the worst stretches of highway I have ever seen in my life.
Any others??

The ones Ive seen in MO were pristine. You want bad highways? Come to IL. MI's highways are pretty bad too as are some in OK.

Massachusetts.

New York, also. Buffalo and Rochester thruways suck. Always something going on there. Nothing but potholes, broken glass, garbage, burning houses in plain sight, toll booths being ripped out, bridges being fixed, roads being torn up. They have quite a bit of work to do in that area.

IMHO, one of the most dangerous stretches of roadway in the U.S. has got to be I-15 from the Los Angeles area to Las Veags. Drivers are distracted on the way up dreaming about what they're going to win. And distracted on the way back by what they've lost.... Add to the mix some pretty good hills, a 55 mph speed limt for trucks (15 mph slower than for cars) and development in the High Desert and it can get pretty ugly.

Haven't run the 48 states in several years, but MI, PA and AR got my vote for some of the worst roads.

Why were you surprised that pavement quality in Canada was not bad? Why would you expect it to be bad?

Michigan. It's like driving on a strip of moon craters. And to think, this is the state our auto industry calls home.

In driving cross-country, I distinctly remember the roads in Arkansas being absolutely horrific. Potholed, too narrow in some spots, too wide in others, no guardrails in places where there should have been, no lighting, lane markings were faded or old ones hadn't been painted over, random gravel or other things on the road. And these were major highways (I-40 being one of them; I can't remember the others). Maybe I just drove through after a twister or something.
