An old friend of mine is graduating high school next year and wants to move out of East Tennessee (he says it's too touristy and doesn't get enough snow for the gloomy weather to be worth it). Where should he move? Here's what he wants:
  • Little to no tourists or transplants
  • Wide open spaces
  • Either lots of sunshine and/or a good amount of snow
  • Cool summers
  • Trucking jobs
  • Proximity to a lake
  • Gun friendly (he loves his guns very much)
  • Conservative
  • At least sorta close to his family in East TN and St. Louis

Kentucky. Specifically outside Frankfort or Lexington.

Here are some suggestions--based on the criteria.

Little to no tourists or transplants
Wide open spaces
Either lots of sunshine and/or a good amount of snow
Cool summers
Trucking jobs
Proximity to a lake
Gun friendly (he loves his guns very much)
Conservative
At least sorta close to his family in East TN and St. Louis

In the southeast: Arkansas (dicey on the "lots of sunshine and minimal snow" though)

In the midwest: Ohio or Indiana

In the plains: Nebraska or Kansas or Oklahoma, honestly

In the west: Wyoming or Idaho would be my #1 picks but both are far away from St Louis and East Tennessee

Probably won’t find anything too close to family.
Kansas checks many boxes and wouldn’t be too far. Maybe Nebraska.
South Dakota is really cool, but a bit far away.
The Plains states are generally better than people give them credit for.
Minnesota would likely be too liberal. Wisconsin is more reasonable for a conservative, just avoid Madison.

How does Iowa compare? Just wondered because we went on a trip to Minneapolis and stayed a night in Iowa. Thought it was nice.

Ah, I forgot to mention Iowa. Yes, a good choice for sure.

A good 4 season state with a lot of snow.

Mostly conservative but can run blue in some areas.

Not as far from St Louis either.

Also, not a heavily touristed state at all.

Good pick.

Just told my friend about Iowa. He liked the idea. Which city in Iowa do you think would be best? I doubt he would like Des Moines because it's growing like crazy.

I'm a little thrown by the 'too touristy' description, unless he lives in or near the Gatlinburg area. If he's from elsewhere in east TN and finds it too touristy he's going to want to carefully check out future locations because many, many places have some kind of tourist industry to some degree or another.

Somewhere in northern Michigan away from the Great Lakes. Cooler summers, plenty of snow, lots of inland lakes, and not touristy because all the tourists are on the lakeshore.
