Peace ... We discovered the splendor of PA by travelling through it on our way to somewhere else. VA to NY

With each overnight stop we'd enjoy soaking up the richness.

Lancaster County is resplendent in its pastoral beauty. Lancaster County PA

..but there is so much to do there too.. everything (activities, shopping, entertainment).

There is plenty to do in Upstate NY and you can afford to do it too. Yes, tax rates can be higher, but there are things that can minimize that. For instance, I'm a veteran and that allows me to get a property tax exemption. Here is more information on exemptions: Property tax exemptions

Keep in mind that the taxes listed are not written in stone due to potential changes. Contest your assessment

Western MA is fairly cheap compared to the big metros, but still relatively pricey compared to much of upstate NY and PA outside Philly. Large variation depending on town, how urban/rural you want, and type of property.

If you're just looking for the most house/land for your money, New England isn't the best, but if the type of place matters (smaller place in a nice town) then it could work. Some of the Berkshire towns (Adams, North Adams, Shelburne Falls, area in and and around Greenfield) may be as good choices as any and mostly inexpensive.
