NJ is probably your worst bet as far as prices and taxes go. Some lovely places to live here, but it's expensive. CT is also pretty costly.
I have always thought Pennsylvania is one of the most beautiful states I've ever been to. Lush and green, rolling hills...it's just a gorgeous and peaceful place.
Upstate New York is beautiful as well. Mile after mile of patchwork farmland.
Last year I went to Vermont for the first time. Also beautiful, plus they don't allow big signs all over the roads, so it has a very natural, uncluttered look. You pass dairy farms with all the cows hanging out in the fields, and then you come to a quaint little town looking like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting.
