I am also aware that all northeasterners do not drive as hard as I suggested, but there is a very definite strong strain that runs through, that I was exposed to through parents, through teachers, and through music festivals and etc. Not everyone was like this, but this is an underlying part of the culture. Here is a great example (Tracy is not even a northeasterner, but he has that same attitude that gets drilled into your head):

PM removed by requestLook dude, I can't even respond to you because the forum only allows me to send one private message per day.

I'm sorry if I have offended you but I'm completely bewildered by your reaction here. I mean no ill will to you personally or to anyone personally. Not sure what more I can say there.

I'm sorry to everyone else for helping to create such a negative atmosphere in this thread. I've learned my lesson and this conversation has run its course.

Condescension's really not helping you make your case. The fact is that people don't have to actually say anything to betray what they really think. I have the feeling you'd make your Midwestern disdain fairly obvious even if you didn't intend to.

Thank you for that very penetrating post. It's true-just like I can detect "pretend" niceness from midwesterners with obvious underlying disdain, they could probably perceive the same in me. I will think this one over. It could be there are not as many differences as meet the eye...

Could be, and probably is, that you're not nearly as good at "detecting pretend niceness" as you think you are. You think you can, because it gives you a reason to dismiss the real, genuine niceness of Midwesterners, but you really can't.
