Anyone here familiar with Gypsies in America, both the "true" Gypsies (Romani) and the Irish or English Travellers? I've never met a person who identified themselves as a Gypsy.

There are Travelers in the US. They often do odd jobs like "roofing," and "paving your driveway." I use the quotation marks because they are flim flam artists and you WILL get ripped off!

And yes, I've seen them in the American South.

I just had some Gypsy neighbors. They always had a different corvette and they didn't have jobs. Their kids didn't go to school and we let off firecrackers with them on the 4th of July. While we were doing that the gypsy dad gave me an artisanal salami , but I don't know why. Then they got evicted a few days later.

Hundreds of Irish Travelers live in Memphis. They live in the same trailer park. They have double-wide trailers with elaborate brick porches. In front of the trailers, they usually have big posters of their children dressed up in costumes and a statue of Mary, Jesus, or a saint. The women drive nice, brand new SUVs, usually Lexus, Mercedes, etc. The men drive trucks. They send their kids to Catholic school but most don't go on to high school. You can find them at expensive restaurants in East Memphis. Anyone who works in a restaurant in that area can spot them easily because they have their own style (women like fur coats, track suits, and 60s style bob haircuts). They have a bad reputation because they're known to steal or at least cause a commotion in restaurants.

I found a video where you can see some.

Skip to :40 and you can see them. Those are very typical Irish Traveler women in Memphis, and I'm pretty sure you can hear their accent. It's a high-pitched, fast version of a Southern accent. People here are fascinated by them, so I'm not surprised that these guys were filming them.

Ugly slander, no other way of saying it..Substitute any other race, ethnicity or orientation for Irish Travellers and the bigotry would be plain.. Being a Irish Traveller is NOT a job description or a lifestyle..The Irish Travellers are a ethnic group , recognized as such by both the Kingdom of Great Britain and the European Union..Recent dna test done in the Rep. of Ireland have found that the Travellers seperated from the settled Irish population sometime between 1 to 2 thousand years ago..Or to quote one of the researchers "The I.T.'s are as different from the settled Irish as the Icelandic people are from the Danes"..
