I often heard about new urban development as being too commercialized. Look at the Americana at Glendale California. It's nice, but it caters to people with a lot of money. All it's stores are chain stores, and it's all artificial. While the architecture is nice, it's just Disneyland. There is a trolley doesn't even go anywhere, just around the plaza for fun. It's like mocking L.A. for it's dead street car era. It's beautiful from the outside, but it's a big joke once you see the inner workings. In terms of architecture, nothing seems sacred anymore. Compare that to places like NY that or DTLA that have those old gothic buildings and every building had it's purpose, THE PEOPLE ran their business.

It all was built up naturally, it wasn't some planned city like it was all created by a corporation. No, it was a city created by the people for the people.

I can't see that happening now days. Maybe the sterile look of modern buildings puts me off, or the fact that we live in an overly corporate America with wall marts.
