For historical reason, US has the 50 states it has done, but in reality, do they each have to be its own "state"?

For example, Rhode Island merging to Connecticut probably makes sense, since the state is near bankrupt and merging will save tax payers a lot of money. CT itself is small enough. Probably the whole thing can merge with MA.

Delaware to become a part of Maryland doesn't seem a bad idea either, does it?

Vermont and New Hampshire?
Virginia and West Virginia?

Have there been such proposals?

Vermont and NH are both very different culturally, the only similarities is the geography

You could probably merge Indiana and Illinois together.

The Chicago area should become a part of Wisconsin, and south of Chicago could merge with Indiana.

One of the things that I like about states rights is your not governing 30-40 million people in most cases. I'd rather it stay as is.

I don't think any state merges will happen. I was just playing along...which I RARELY do.

I really doubt Delaware wants Maryland's taxes and faraway capital. It would make much more sense to merge Delaware, Maryland's Eastern Shore, and Accomack and Northampton counties in Virginia into a new state. New Castle might do well as part of PA since it's not a very "Marylandish" county.

I would only suggest merging if a 51 state were added, I like the idea of just 50 states, not 49 or 51.
