Whenever someone says "THE" in front of a freeway or highway number. Californians refer to THE 10, or THE 5, or THE 215. I don't know of anyone else that says this. Here in Baltimore we just say "take 95 North" or "take 695 west then 83 south". When I heard someone say that she takes "the 695 to the 83" I KNEW she was from California and I was right. Even in other places with lots and lots of freeways like Dallas or Atlanta I've not heard this.

What is "THE 215" anyway, is it the one in Los Angeles or the one in Las Vegas?

That's only Southern California, we don't put "the" in front of freeway names in Northern California.

Default Oregon

Get them to pronounce "Oregon". If they know how to pronounce it correctly ("or-i-gən"), they're probably from the West Coast.

There's definitely a California accent, though it seems to differ whether NorCal or SoCal.

It's definitely distinct from the "flat" nasal Midwest accent, and other regional accents.

I remember my Orange County cousins always had some weird slang and different mannerisms too, at least compared to where I was living (in the Northeast and Midwest).

Nevada too. If they say 'nuh-VAH-da', it immediates gives away they are from back east or at least not from the west.

Well ofcourse if the word "Hella" or "Hecka" comes out of their mouth there is a 99% chance they are from California...most likely NorCal. Im pretty guilty of saying these words everyday.

They did that in Arizona too. The 10, the 17. You get it on the news all the time. I guess that's how it rubbed off on us.
