Living on $100 a day, to me, would be an inconceivable luxury. I live in the USA on $30 a day, and I've never had more than that in my life. There isn't anyplace in the world I could not live on $100 a day, and I wouldn't even have to scrimp.

Of course the cited web article deducts 25% for taxes, but I haven't even filed a tax return in 22 years, so I don't need to concern myself with that "cost of living".

I'd like to see you live in Singapore on $100 a day.

I assure you there are plenty of Singaporeans who live on less than that.

It's easy in Little India. That's where all the backpackers stay. My wife and I spent a week in Singapore passing through to Indonesia, and a couple more days on the way back, and we would have considered $40 a day for the both of us to be a budget-buster, but we managed OK.

No matter what generalization a person makes in any thread in any forum, a person who sets out to uncover an exception to it somewhere in the world will probably be rewarded for his pointless effort.

I assure you those that do have cheap public housing and are barely making ends meet. I assure that an expat trying to move to SG and live on 100 USD a day will face headwinds.

Well, if you want to live on $40 a day forever in SG in retirement , you will not do well. $14,000 a year USD in SG for an expat is ridiculous. Go for it though.

I could do it, but I don't want to and it's not an exercise I would recommend. Congratulations, though, you did find the one country in the world in which it would be difficult, because Singapore has no outlying countryside where one could take refuge from high city costs. Wait, there's at lest one other -- Seychelles. Thanks for proving me right -- a contrarian can always find an anecdotal exception to any generalization, regardless of how true the generalization is.

If I had, absolutely had, to have a Singapore base, I could very, very easily live on $14K a year in Johor Baru, and take the local bus a half hour to Singapore whenever necessary. Unless you define "expat" in the usual rich-American way, as someone who absolutely must have a private car and domestic help and western style food and acces to US standards of health care. In which case you can probably not live anywhere in the world in $100 a day.
