Deep South is the real thing. Upper South, while nice in its own way, is a pale imitation.
What makes it real? For that matter what makes the upper south the "pale imitation?" The Upper South is where the south began. The only reason it progressed further was because cotton was a more profitable cash crop as opposed to tobacco. I'm not trying to be confrontational but I am just curious on how or why you regard it as more real?
I think it's hard to say one is real or not. They are different for sure but I don't think there really are any definitive ways to validate ones authenticity over the other.
Well I left the upper south for a reason (a lot of reasons, actually), but if I had to choose one or the other, I'd choose the upper south. As if that's not miserable enough during summer as it is.
If there is Spanish moss hanging from the Live Oaks, then that is the real South.
Exerpt from "The Trees of Florida" for Quercus Virginiana or Live Oaks.
Typical southern live oaks are endemic from southeast Virginia to Florida, including the Florida Keys,[5] and west to
southeast Texas. Texas live oaks grow primarily in Texas, on the Edwards Plateau and the Rio Grande Plain, but can be found as far west as Terrell County, Texas, in southwestern Oklahoma and northeastern Mexico.
It encompasses both upper and lower...again which do you LIKE better and WHY.

It's just a matter of opinion. Relax. I have been to the upper south an d liked it very much. But to me the deep south where I am accustomed screams south a little bit more. When a place has never heard of black eyed peas I just find it not the south I know. I would expect that in Illinois, but Virginia!? Mardi Gras, gumbo, purple hull peas, catfish, shrimp and oysters, bbq, etc. To me that's the south.
Austin is neither Deep or Upper South. Austin is in a sub-region all to it's own called "The Western South" as is most of Texas, except for The Trans-Pecos Region, which is the straight-up Southwest.

I guess we could all make up subregions to avoid being associated with the dreaded DEEP.

To me that's Louisiana...except the BBQ of course.
And I know it's just opinion...I was just trying to say that one portion of the souths traits shouldn't trump another portion of the souths. I mean...people in western nc, eastern tn, and southwestern va could drive to Macon or Shreveport and say...well they have no bluegrass music or no good BBQ....so this isn't southern. It just doesn't work that way. The things you seem to like are deep south traits...the things I seem to like are upland south. Both southern....just different parts.
