Wasn't there a study done that showed what cities were sprawled? In actuality sprawl is just the spread of development to under used or unused land. In this case, even NYC sprawls. Dense sprawl is still sprawl.
Then there are the "cities" within cities, when the places get large enough. Chicago is the best example in the World. Its 100 miles long and 75 miles wide these days. Lots of options as to sprawl , neiborhoods, northsiders, southsiders, and far out burbs growing up around corn fields. been going on a long time...and I see no stoping it.

My, this is an old thread, but always informative ,it goes on.
I am sure it's been discussed so again, it's not always about population. Was the largest city in America for a long while , Jacksonville, Florida. What that urban sprawl was all about was annexing the whole County.......

It had nothing to do with annexation for sprawl, rather financial considerations involving funding two separate law enforcement agencies, fire support, public works, etc. Unincorporated areas of Jacksonville were and still are low density. Having one of everything in terms of public service agencies under the umbrella of Jacksonville versus both the city and Duval County minimizes costs and makes good economic sense.
Orlando is my opinion is a leading candidate for sprawl city designation. The city has just 240K in population and is credited as an MSA with over 2 million people. How does that not qualify?
