Artsy-Fartsy Towns
What Cities/areas (with population more than 500k but less than 2M) are surprisingly artsy?
fartsy is optional...

Perhaps not suprisingly, but Portland is very artsy.

hmmm, how about 2 categories?
the above, and for moi, add the stipulation that it has to be east of the Mississippi and south of the mason dixon line.

Albuquerque, New Mexico - it seems like everyone there has an easel in a back room with a painting they are working on.

Minneapolis, MN has a very strong arts (especially performing arts) scene, one of the best in the country.
Minneapolis proper has about 350k, neighboring St. Paul about 300k, and the Twin Cities area as a whole 3m. However, it seems that most of the art-related stuff is concentrated in Minneapolis.

I'm not sure what the population stats are, but my vote goes for Ann Arbor, Michigan!

Frederick, MD - artsy with art festivals too often - east of the mississippi and south of the Mason/dixon line
but i guess it doesn't fit the population criteria
but i must say, mabey people need a little US geography course, austin (w of miss), Minneapolis(w of miss, n of m/d line), Ann arbor (n of M/D line), Albuquerque (w of miss) and portland (W of Miss, about level with M/D line)
