What are the nicer towns in the US that are close to the beach for a family to live? Is the West Coast a lot different than the East coast ? If you can please give me some ideas I would appreciate it, Thanks so much

Very different! It depends which you prefer I guess. Have you been to either coast? Cost of living is typically more expensice on the coasts, so it also depends on your budget.

Depends on what you like.
Panama City Beach, white sand lots of activities, young people flock there, spring break is big, waves are'nt much being on the gulf.

Myrtle Beach...Redneck Rivieara...lots of activities...badly planned roads, takes forever to go anywhere during the season. make sure you look at the room your renting first because...just because.

Daytona Beach, lots of activities, great food, drive on beach to park, hotels and resorts, mixture of ages, waves can be surfed but nothing like west coast.

Keys in Fla, calm warm clear water, fishing, boating, great food, resorts, snorkling or scuba along beautiful reefs in largo, John Pennekamp or take a trip to barrier islands off key west, laid back.

Gulf Port MS, nothing like it was prior to the hurricane but....Casinos, hardly anyone was ever on these beaches even before the hurricane so you can go anywhere and be alone, take a ship out to ships island and see the fort, swim fish, stays about 8 to 10 degrees hotter than fla beaches and the humidity is a killer but worth seeing.

The Great Lakes cities make great beach towns, particularly Chicago and Cleveland.

I have never lived on the West Coast, so I couldn't tell you about that. But, I have lived in Florida my whole life. In my opinion, the best Beach cities to live in are Daytona, New Smyrna and Ft. Lauderdale. Right now my husband and I are living in Palm Coast. We hate the city, but there are nice beaches around here.

thanks so much for all your help !!

RCM58 is 100% right! Make sure you check the room in Myrtle beach that your renting first....I thought I was the only one that noticed that...Keep looking until you find a clean one and dont let the 4 star hotels fool you.

Thanks for the suggestions too, appreciate it

I'm going to broaden the topic with things that people like in a beach.

I happen to like a good surf. Some beaches don't have much surf at all. They are boring.

I have family in the SE. They seem to enjoy tipid water. I don't mind that the water is a bit brisk on the NE, particularly in the early part of the summer. It is refreshing.

I heard the waters on the West Coast are VERY COLD. Also, I imagine swimming is greatly different due to the differences between the continental shelf. You can't go very far out on the West Coast before you are in some SERIOUSLY deep water. If you don't like that, then it would be a big minus.

I really like Edisto Island. It is just 'down the road' from Hilton Head without all the tourists. It is fairly underdeveloped (by town ordinance) and I like the fact that there is LITTLE to do.

All the little towns that make up Fire Island are very distinct in nature. A different beach for each personality. There are family enclaves, singles enclaves and homosexual enclaves. It's very cool that you can only get there by ferry, and the Fire Island group of beaches is considered one of the top beaches in the World (according to Conde Naste)

I dream of taking a vacation to Bali or Tahiti and taking a dip right from my floating hut! One day.

Freezing! (Especially coming from the tropical like climate of South Florida.) Even in the summer time, the water is very cold. I definitely prefer warmer waters here.. its not very enjoyable when youre in the water freezing and shivering. But the West Coast has better scenery.

As dragon said, the west coast is defenitely much colder, but it has better scenery. I have swam on the west coast, but it is defenitely much colder than the east. Just depends on what you want.

Wilmington, Delaware and Wilmington, NC are both within an easy drive of the beach. NC has warmer water, and it gets HOT! DE has a little cooler water, and more moderate temps. Still hot enough to go in the water in the summer. DE has jellyfish.
