About 5.5 miles from Pennsylvania, 12.5 from Maryland and 5 miles from New Jersey, as the crow flies.

Having grown up in NEPA, we could always escape to NY or NJ. It took a little longer to get to DE. I liked living near borders and big cities. Some never left town, but we always did.

Surprised by how many people live extremely close to the border...

Not really that surprising. I would suspect that the population of posters on this site from the Northeast is pretty high. There are a lot of people living either in relatively small states (such as MA, CT, RI, etc.) who by dint of geography will necessarily live close to their state's border. It's not really possible to be far from a state border in some of those states. Other people will live in large urban areas in relatively big states that are fairly close to a border (such as New York City, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore, DC, etc.) Again that would skew the distribution toward smaller distances to state borders.

The Hudson River...

Or he could live in Staten Island by the Goethals, Outerbridge or Bayonne.

True, but that wouldn't be 0 miles and on the border--there are rivers there that make that impossible. Sorry to be nitpicky, but I was genuinely curious if there was some sort of exclave or boundary that would make that true, especially since 80% of Ellis Island is in New Jersey.

What would really be interesting is how far one can technically be in the contiguous US from a state border. I'd have to guess that would be somewhere in Texas...

I'm in Dallas/Fort Worth. Most folks on this side of the metro are about 90-100 miles to the Oklahoma border.

Actually, now that I think about it, South Florida is probably the farthest place in the contiguous US from a state line.
