Nobody knows. It has been decades since anybody has walked anywhere in an American city, even in the daytime.

OP, are you talking about in the downtown business area, in residential areas, in the suburbs, or in shopping malls/districts?

"After dark" can mean 5:00 pm in winter in some northern cities, which would include walking to your car after work.

I agree with this. You say shopping after dark. Most retail districts, even after dark, are going to have a lot of people around. Those kinds of places are usually pretty safe areas in any city.

Go go Google Maps, put your cursor on any spot at random in any city, just pick one, like Akron or Pueblo or Roanoke, click Street View, and go ten blocks along any street, and see how many people you see walking in the daytime.

You cannot generalize about this because that sort of "safety" is very neighborhood specific in ALL cities. Mostly, the more upscale the neighorhood in any city, the more likely it is you will find people comfortably out and about after dark. And you'll find just the opposite in poor, high-crime neighborhoods. And you can find both types of neighborhoods in almost every city.

For privacy reasons Google airbrushes out people on the street in "StreetView", therefore not exactly a telltale sign of pedestrian activity.
