Moving from New Jersey, to New Mexico, a state with 1/4th the population, there seems to be more of presence when it comes to street gangs. In New Jersey, you have to go into inner cities to find them, in New Mexico, it seems as if there are chapters in all areas, be it urban or rural. We live in a pretty nice neighborhood, yet, 2 months after we moved here, a wall in our development was 'tagged'. That never would have happened in suburban NJ, for instance. A state with a almost equal population to New Mexico, West Virginia, seems not to have many gangs, in contrast to New Mexico, anyway. It set my mind to wondering: which state has the lowest gang activity per population? Crime is often a determining factor when it comes to relocating to a place, especially if there are children involved. I'd love to be able to research it more, but in the meantime, thought I'd throw it out to the forum here to read feedback.

Statistically speaking, North Dakota is rated the safest state in the USA.
I think its the long cold winters...

I would say that the least amount of gang activity would be in Wyoming or New Hampshire

Wisconsin has substantial gang problems up in Milwaukee, actually.

Just use your head... any big city probably has gang problems. List the states with no real big cities and you have your answer. ND, SD, MT, ID, NH, VT, ME, WY, etc. As long as you mind your own business and stay away from bad areas especially when alone, you should be fine just about anywhere. Dallas is supposively one of the most dangerous big cities and we felt perfectly safe there. Of course we avoided bad areas but in the ok areas it's not a problem.

Yeah, Milwaukee is pretty rough at spots. With being so close to Chicago, I don't think Wisconsin should be listed.

Yes it does.

ND, SC, MT, ME, VT....pretty much any of the lesser populated, really cold States would be a safe bet for your list. Guess gang don't like having to bundle up against subzero wind chills. Thank goodness.

Is that SC as in South Carolina? Because if it is, you are partially correct. They are not big in gangs down there. But they are not safe in many areas.
