What do you think is the most overrated city in the United States??

[moderator note] Keep the conversation here civil, folks. This is a negative-premise thread, so it won't take much to get it shut down. Be extra careful not to violate the TOS section below or you might find your abilty to post shut down.

Be civil, no personal attacks, flaming, or insults. We may attack ideas (politely) but we do not attack the speaker of the idea. Be careful with your words, there is a point where being direct crosses a line into blunt, in-your-face hostility. Please, report bad posts instead of engaging in flame wars on the boards. Insulting another member or a moderator will not be tolerated anywhere on this website. This includes Direct Messages and Reputation Comments.

If you disagree with something, say so, but explain WHY.

Austin, TX - hands down. Seattle comes in at a close second, but its at least more deserving of its hype than Austin is.

I never been to Austin before, but I have heard that it is overhyped from other people. Why would you say that? Does it have unique neighborhoods, or is it just your boring homogenous urban sprawl city?

LA is the most overhyped. Austin is second.

From what I saw of it, and I drove around quite a bit when I was there, its not much more than an overgrown college town. Miles and miles of boring homogenous sprawl. Downtown was nice but nothing spectacular especially when comparing to Houston or Dallas.

New York City and Chicago are both overrated. Boston should be on that list too, Boston is a major city and quite overrated.

Vegas, some where in my head I look behind the flashy facade
and expect to see really long lumber on a 45 degree angle.

Could you please elaborate why you think those cities are overrated? Thanks.

What makes a city overrated. And are people confusing the city for being over hyped instead of overrated. Because my answer is that no city is overrated. But many cities are over hyped.

Those cities are just a popularity contest. They're big and well-known and people seem to like them just for that. Where I live right now, people think Boston is the place to be and don't understand why anyone would want to be anywhere else (superiority complex). I notice an even more extreme superiority complex in New York City and I don't have much experience with Chicago but some posters on this forum from Chicago have a superiority complex. And what good is a city if it's too cold to do anything outside half the year? I know others agree with me because the population shift from the North to the Sunbelt speaks for itself.
