Not really dominated, but Charlotte is HEAVILY dependent on both Wachovia and Bank of America. If one or both were to leave town, the results would be devastating.
Washington DC and burbs = the Federal Government (OK, Uncle Sam is not a private company but it's the best example of one single employer dominating one big metro area).
There's so few mega industrial companies left in production in the US anymore, it's not like the old times when you could have easily said Pittsburgh = US Steel or Flint = GM or Wilmington DE = Dupont. Hold on, I think Wilmington DE = Dupont is still valid.
GM killed Flint. It didn't build Flint per se, although I don't actually know how big Flint was 100 years ago.
Decatur, Illinois is dominated by ADM, but it's only about 75K-80K people. Peoria is pretty much about Caterpillar.
