Please explain how flattening the Rocky Mountains is "needed".

Back in the 1950s, there were serious proposals to level mountains and hills with atomic bombs. These same people nearly managed to go ahead with infilling the entire San Francisco Bay in the name of development and progress. It was ridiculous crap like that--modernism taken so far as to almost sound parodic--which helped lead to the modern environmental/conservation movement.

There is still an anti-environmentalist strain out there which, to quote one of their screeds, believes that the earth could be encased "in a crypt of concrete and computers" and that we don't actually need trees or whales.
