ugh The NY and WV answers here are mostly stereotypes and assumptions.

Makes me ill. NY is not NYC, WV is not full of inbreds. Jeeeeeeeeeeeeez, people. Learn a thing.

well living here in virginia, west virginia is our whipping boy and gets the hillbilly status

I would just like to see something different. WV, NY and CA are always the same story from people. "Hick, NYC, Hollywood". In truth these three states are so different from that idea.

The OP asked...what was the "first" thing you think of. It's just a fun thread using word (state) association.

For instance, when I think of California...the very first thing that pops into my head is Los Angeles. Now I've been through California several times and realize the state is MUCH more than LA. But...I can't help but think of LA when somebody says California.
