And conversely, which neighboring states are most dissimilar culturally or politically? I submit that Washington and Idaho are quite different. There is usually a two or three state gradation in differences, but these two share a common bounday. Washington is a liberal state, Idaho among the top two or three most conservative (at least politically, but one usually goes with the other). Of course Eastern Washington is conservative but overall, with the very large liberal population west of the Cascades (especially King County, which makes up about 28% of Washington's population), the state as a whole is very blue. Idaho is very red.
