We are a family relocating and looking in particular at the East Coast due to what appears to be a large number of resources for Asperger's children and teens.
We are looking at traveling in Spring 2013 to visit various communities with either public or private school options as well as other Asperger/HFA services. We do not have a current IEP as we have been living overseas for the past three years for work-related reasons. our son first showed symptoms of Apergers in preschool/kindergarten and in 2009 our son was diagnosed by two specialists (including Stanford Hoapital's Autism Dept) with HFA/Aspergers. However after a year of testing through our local CA school district he was diagnosed as "ED" and placed in a special ED classroom with a teacher and aids with no Autism experience whatsoever. This was a disaster and after 4 months in that school we relocated overseas for business reasons. I am currently homeschooling our son and while he has progressed markedly, we need to incorporate additional services that are not available here.
Due to our current work situation, we are extremely flexible and can move almost anywhere that fulfills the educational and social needs of the family. We are also hoping to find a nice friendly community for the rest of the family including a nuero-typical lively 9 year old boy and my father (hoping for good Sr. services and social programs for a retired Academic). I have spent a lot of time on the Internet and of course it's not a fast research project! I have encountered quite a bit of information from NC, MD, NJ but am hoping to get more personalized feedback from anyone that can help.
Thank you in advance for any information you can provide us!
