For the OP, here is a density map of the United States. You'll see by color coding there are many areas on the East Coast at or below the national average for population density.

Where I'm from seems to have become terribly crowded. The I-95 corridor between Boston and Providence. It now feels like it is one crowded community after another, between these two Metro's. Then it just continues on and on down 95 all the way to the suburbs of Northern VA. It has started to feel like the entire Northeast along 95, is the same big monstrous Metro. It many ways it is.
